The final project will be a publication that integrates research, writing, audio, video, and graphic elements in the exploration of a larger overarching theme. The purpose of this assignment is to expose you to the processes of pitching, developing, organizing, managing and producing a multimedia publication—both as individuals and as a collaborative team.

Research: Always research first.

Summary lede (AKA Straight News Lede, 5W’s Lede)
Punch lede – It uses strong verbs and short sentences that are meant to create an impact.

(19296 words)
I’m really glad I chose to read this essay because it had the most happening as far as multimedia and story elements go. I liked how Brian Phillips basically took an idea that he liked, with elements that he had no experience with—such as cold weather and piloting an airplane—and just went with it.

Jes Skolnik (1254 read)
This essay is one-of-a-kind, because you can see how much work the author has put into not just the writing, but the planing behind creating an all-ages space. This is unlike most of the other articles that I read because it doesn’t feature much in the terms of multimedia use.

“Thank god Arcadia doesn’t have sororities,” was my first thought when I read this article. I think this piece was a work of art, and after reading it for a third time I will begin to explain why but first, I need to talk about my own brief run in with sorority girls.

Is there a box of Kleenex in the house? Because Mandy Lee Catron’s “To Fall in Love With Anyone, Do This” has definitely struck a well of tears over in this neck of the library. Besides the fact that Catron and her not-so-much-of a stranger beau actually ended up falling in love after conducting Dr. Aron’s study on themselves, this story has left me in awe for a number of reasons, which I will lay out shortly.

I’m not a huge fan of Nev Schulman or the show Catfish in general, but I didn’t think it was this bad. Personally, if I’m not super into a person or show I’m not going to check up on them, which is probably why I didn’t know that he was (according to Healy) and complete dick.

The multimedia publication Student Aid: How one school board is defeating bullying, one friendship at a time was a really interesting read, especially after just finishing the new TV series 13 Reasons Why. It is perfect to read at this moment, as there is a whole lot of controversy about the show due to the fact that they did not give any solutions to depression and bullying.

Even In Real Life, There Were Screens Between Us by Caitlin Dewey
The story in this essay made me really sad, but I wasn’t particularly surprised by the outcome in the end - she wasn’t that into the guy in person when she met him, and it’s easy to see only some parts of someone and to romanticize them by filling in the missing details with stuff you do like. Will seems like a nice guy and I don’t judge Caitlin’s life choices at all - I really don’t - but it seems to me that this is less of a commentary on the general failures of online relationships (and maybe more broadly, communication in general) and more of a personal story.

Shirtless Trump Saves Drowning Kitten by Brian Phillips
Well, there’s a lot to unpack in this relatively short article. Where else can we start but with the title…
This article, as the subheading indicates, is about “Facebook’s Fake-News Problem And the Rise of the Postmodern Right.” Believe it or not, this article has nothing to do with a shirtless Trump or drowning kittens (although, if we stick with the theme of postmodernism, how can we know for sure?) Instead, the title functions as a comment on the sensational fake news headlines so prevalent on Facebook.

Love Letters by Katie Barker
What I found most striking about this piece was how it didn’t try to make me hate the brides. It took what would be a normal (patriarchal, misogynistic) story about this army of "ridiculous brides who are so over-obsessed with having the perfect wedding that they actually take their invitations to some small town in Oregon so the cancellation would look nice," (as a lesser author/person would have put it) and made it mean something.
