Protected: The Reckoning

Pamela Colloff's, The Reckoning, is a fascinating piece of literature that stirs emotions from beginning to end. It follows the life of Claire Wilson and shares her incredible story after her near fatal encounter with Charles Whitman, or the man who killed 16 and wounded 31 in the University of Texas shooting of 1966. Throughout the narrative, Claire's life was shown in a perspective that one could almost call nightmarish. From her rough childhood to her eventual closure, Claire was overcome with some of the most unthinkable tragedies a person can endure. In a person's life, tragedies are usually rare.

Protected: Where Germans Make Peace With Their Dead

The piece by Burkhard Bilger, Where Germans Make Peace With Their Dead, may have been the most shocking and heart pounding piece I have read. Being a World War II fanatic, probably not the best title, and having family that fought in the war, hearing the other side of the story was something I never thought I’d be too interested in. The perspective has always been told from that of Hitler or one of his officers. The mindset of the country has never seemed to come to light, especially about how they feel about their ancestors. These piece dives into two very compelling topics.

Protected: F*ck Boston

Wow. I haven't heard someone talk so shittily about something since Joe Pesci conversing about anything in Goodfellas.  Hamilton Nolan could not have voiced a stronger opinion than he did. Saying "Fuck" to everything that Boston has to offer is a tad harsh. He even went as far to give a big fuck you to all the prestigious universities that Boston is the home of. I find the way that he talks about Boston because not only is he cursing the city, but he is also bringing light to the awesomeness of it.

Protected: Criminal Episode 33

This installment of Criminal was very interesting. The story that is told in Episode 33: Deep Dive, is about Sgt. David Mascarenas, who is a dive specialist for the LA Police Department. In Episode 33, the Dive Specialist is sent into the Tar Pits to find some evidence that was believed to be dumped there in a high profile murder case. Mascarenas took it upon himself to dive into the Tar Pits in search of the evidence.

Protected: Crimetown Episode 9: A Deal with the Devil

A Deal with the Devil is nothing short of amazing. The content, the atmosphere, and the style all create an impactful podcast. While listening to the Crimetown podcast, I could not help but feel as though I am in the courtroom, or in the jail because of how perfectly these three aspects flow together. The narration paints a beautiful picture of the places the story takes place, and the interviews are nothing less than breathtaking. To hear about the world of organized crime, that is not fictional, really opens the listener's ears to what is being said.

Protected: Dressing Casual in Your 20s

The Art of Manliness was a little jewel that I stumbled upon when I was in the market for a straight razor. I have to say that it has done nothing but provide great tips and enjoyable media products. The premise of the multi media publication is to be a father figure who gives advice to those who are searching for how to be a better man. In this installment, readers are taught the proper way to dress casual and to look as though they deserve respect in their post undergrad years. The  article starts out by explaining how a 20-something year old should not be so concerned with looking like a CEO all of the time.

Protected: Corruption, Murder, and the Beautiful Game

When I think about Fifa, I think of big name stars putting their football skills on display for their loving fans. The matches are heart stopping and always end with either heartbreak or endless joy. The crowds and their enthusiasm bring a spectacle to the world that causes pride to rise for each and every country in attendance. When I think of Fifa, I do not think about the back alley deals, the bribery, or the violence that comes along with such a beautiful game. Grantland’s Brian Phillips uses his piece, Corruption, Murder, and the Beautiful Game to portray the grimy underworld of Fifa that even a non-fan would be outraged about.
